The Day You Kept Touching Your Face
By Nat Habit
You werenât even thinking about itâjust resting your chin, scratching your cheek, brushing hair away, scrolling with one hand, cheek propped on the other. But inside your skin? The cells were watching. And reacting.
Sebocyte (oil gland, annoyed):
âHey! Every time a fingertip lands here, I get smudged, pressed, or overactivated.â âYour hands are pushing bacteria and dirt into my poresâand then you blame me for breakouts!â
Langerhans Cell (skinâs immune sensor):
âNew foreign particles detectedâagain. Traces of dust, microbes, food oils, random street grime⊠all delivered via finger express.â âHow many alerts do I need to send before you stop?!â
Corneocyte (surface protector):
âCan we get a break from the friction?â âYou keep rubbing and dragging the surface. That micro-damage might seem invisible now, but over time? Redness, dryness, even barrier thinning.â
Keratinocyte (living skin builder):
âWe're trying to maintain a healthy, even layer. But every time the surface is pressed, scratched, or poked, it disturbs our turnover cycle.â âYouâre slowing healing and inviting inflammation.â
Microbiome (your skinâs good bacteria, distressed):
âHey! That last hand brought in keyboard germs, leftover chips, and who knows what else.â âOur ecosystem is getting overwhelmed. Weâre struggling to keep the bad guys in check!â
Fibroblast (deep in the dermis, sighing):
âYou keep poking, prodding, pressing⊠over time, that leads to breakdown in elasticity.â âWant sagging, enlarged pores, and collagen fatigue? Because thatâs how you get them.â
Melanocyte (pigment producer, nervously watching):
âIf this friction keeps going, I may need to deposit more melanin to protect the skin. Thatâs how dark spots and uneven tone sneak in. Especially in acne-prone areas.â
Macrophage (immune soldier, half-asleep):
âAnother finger? Again? Should I bother responding? Or just wait for the breakout to happen?â
Keratinocyte (final plea):
âLookâwe know youâre thinking, bored, or stressed. But every touch disrupts the calm. Let us just be for a while.â
Skinâs Quiet Wish:
âTouch me with intentionânot out of habit. Clean hands, clean tools, and less contact help me stay calm, clear, and balanced.â
